The Best Part?
All of these tips are proven and absolutely free.
So let's get right into it!
Here are the tips youâll learn in this post:
You may already know the importance of keeping our hands clean.
By washing our hands, we avoid the risk of getting sick and spreading germs to others.
But what you may not know is that our hands can be one of the major reasons for damaging the leather handbag.
Hereâs a brief reason why dirty hands can damage your leather.
Leather is quite prone to absorb substances once it gets in contact with it. The most common way these substances get in contact with the leather is through our hands. When you touch your leather handbag after using oil of any sort, it naturally gets absorbed in the leather. If it's left uncleaned, it will cause stain spots after some time.
The best way to prevent this?
Making sure that you wash your hands properly after using any sort of cosmetics, oil-related product or coming back from an unhealthy environment.
Simply put, basic hand wash is your first weapon.
Easy enough?
Letâs move on to the next one!
It can be tempting to use every bit of space available in your handbag. But overstuffing (even routinely) can be one of the worst things you could do to your leather handbag.
Why? Because it can permanently distort its original shape.
When you overstuff your leather handbag, the load makes the straps of your handbag stretch more than it's required too. This eventually leads to your leather handbag getting torn.
The question is: How can we judge whether we have packed in just enough in the bag?
Hereâs what we recommend you use to judge your handbagâs space.
By following the 75% rule. This simply means that you should fill in approximately 75% of the space in your leather handbag. Things such as cosmetics, loose cash or coins are best suited to be carried in a separate pouch.
This small effort in organizing will make a huge difference in the long run.
When it comes to taking care of your leather handbag, how quickly you deal with stains is probably one of the most crucial factors.
Why? Because if it's not treated on time, it could lead to permanent marks. Hereâs how you can avoid that from happening.
If you spill water on your leather bag:
You can stop here if you wish too and it will be fine.
But you can still apply a leather conditioner to the area gently and let it off to dry overnight (This is optional but highly effective)
Moving on.
If your leather bag has grease or oil stains:
Leather has the tendency to oxidize (leather substance chemically combining with oxygen).
What does that mean? Over a period of time when the leather (handbag) is exposed to oxygen, the surface of it will start to crack, flake and become weak. This is something that will happen eventually and we cannot do anything about it. However. We can slow the process down significantly by properly storing the leather handbag.
The best place to store your leather handbag would be in its original box.
If you still have the box, you can be assured it will be safe there. Now, for those who donât have the box. Hereâs the next best place you can store it. In a large breathable dust bag. After putting it in the dust bag, you can put it in a cool and dark place.
A closet would be suitable compared to your table, drawer, floor and doorknob. Why?
Because there is more chance of sunlight exposure on the table then it is in the closet. Exposure to sunlight will dry out the leatherâs natural oils and it can lead to cracking of the surface.
If you put it on the floor, it may increase its chance to have fungal growth in some bags. Why take the risk?
Putting your leather handbags handle on the door knob can also lead to unnecessary stretching. This may cause distortion as well as cracks on the leather over a short period of time. As for the drawer, you may have to squeeze the bag in the drawer which can lead to its shape being distorted. Eventually looking overused and saggy. We donât want that.
Thatâs why itâs best suited to put in a closet after wrapping it up in a dust bag or in the original box it came in.
Lets go a bit more on the specifics.
If your Leather handbags have metal chains, buckles or handles, then it's suitable to wrap it in paper or bubble wrap. This will make sure that it doesnât leave any marks on the exterior as well as the interior of your leather handbag.
That's it. If you apply all the above tips, your leather bag will be in a top-notch condition for several years.
